An industrial rotary screw compressor is a gas compressor that uses a rotary positive displacement mechanism to replace more traditional piston compressors where large volumes of compressed gas are required. Rotary screw compressors use two very closely meshed helical screws, called rotors, to compress the gas. In dry-running screw compressors, timing gears ensure that the male and female rotors remain in precise alignment without rapidly wearing contacts. The gas compression process of the rotating screw is a continuous sweeping motion, so there are few pulsations or fluctuations in the flow, just like a piston compressor. This also makes screw compressors quieter than piston compressors, produces less vibration, even at large sizes, and yields some benefits in terms of efficiency.
